Maggie Lowe

Music is my life.  Music is my love.  Music is my drug.

That is why, as I was considering how to introduce myself, music is the first thing that came to mind.  Music has never failed me, broken my heart, or left me alone when I needed someone.  Music is air.

So … to give you a little more insight into who exactly this Maggie Lowe is, here are my top 10 favorite songs of ALL TIME, and what those songs say about me and my life.

Maestro, take it away.

Jessica: The Allman Brothers Band, Brothers and Sisters, 1973

Road Trip.  This song feels like a road trip.  And I LOVE road trips.  My best friend and I usually try to get to Florida to see my aunt and uncle at least once a year, and my mom and dad and I took a road trip when I was ten out west to see Yellowstone, Colorado, the Tetons, etc.  I once had a summer job with the Eseeola Lodge out in Linville, and I used most of my paychecks on gas.  I have that part of the state memorized.  I first met this song through my father because The Allman Brothers Band is his all time FAVORITE group in the history of the world.  Even the band holds a warm spot in my heart.  But this song is my all time favorite!

Yellow Submarine: The Beatles, Revolver, 1966

This is the first Beatles song I’ve mentioned but this is by far one of my all time favorite bands.  I love the boys.  One thing that has always intrigued me about them is that they wouldn’t have held quite as long if they hadn’t written some of THE weirdest songs you’ve ever heard in your life!  Paperback Writer, Lady Madonna, Octopus’ Garden, and I am the Walrus just to mention a tiny, tiny few.  But when I first heard Yellow Submarine…I knew it fully captured the level of weirdness I most often associated myself with.  I memorized it and to this day can sing it all the way through with the band break between the second verse and second chorus.  I remember singing it all the time in high school until all my class mates had learned the words.  One girl came in one day and announced she had been at Subway the day before and heard Yellow Submarine playing of the speakers.  She lifted her head and exclaimed, “Hey!  That’s our song!”

Here Comes the Sun: The Beatles, Abbey Road, 1969

I have always loved the Beatles and I have always been pretty sure I was born in the wrong decade because of them.  As you have read under some of the other songs, this song is hope to me.  I love Contemporary Christian, as we have already discussed, but to me this is the ultimate song of hope.  As a guitar player, this song is absolutely beauty-full and wonder-full.  I hope these songs have given you a little insight into who I am.  My love is music…this music is my life.

Tears in Heaven: Eric Clapton, Rush (Soundtrack), 1991

My father taught me how to play guitar and he learned off an Allman Brother’s LP and played at bars and clubs when the “retro” songs I love were new.  That being said, Eric Clapton easily has my vote for king of the world.  He’s an amazing guitar player but this song is very special to me.  It was written in 1991 after his four-year old son fell off a third story balcony and died.  He wrote two songs about his son and has now retired the two songs.  This song is beautiful to me but has an even more important meaning to me.  My friend Lucas Lowe, a phenomenal guitar player and private first class in the Marine Corp., liked this song so much…they played it at his funeral.  He was 20.  It also helped me through the loss of my best friend Kayla Norman who was 19 years old when she died in 2009 and it brings back fond memories of my high school class mate and hero Mary Moser who lost a four year battle with cancer in 2009 at the age of 20.

I Believe I Can Fly: R. Kelly, Space Jam (Soundtrack), 1996

This is a song I sing all the time.  It’s a fun melody and I like it because I get to be myself and super stupid with this song.  :)  I sing it like this:  ”I believe I can fly…except I tried one time and I hurt myself.”  And I say that after every…single…line.  It’s annoying but it makes me laugh!  And other people around me too.  I did enjoy the movie but this song is one of my favorites for different reasons.  I love how easy it is to remember…and I love the sentiment.  No matter what happens…I believe I can fly.  No matter where I go…I believe I can fly.  And no matter how bad things get in this country…I believe I can fly.

The More Boys I Meet: Carrie Underwood, Carnival World, 2007

I LOVE country music, I LOVE Carrie Underwood, and I LOVE MY DOG AND EVERYONE ELSE’S TOO!!!  I live out in the middle of the woods with no “neighbors” around, so growing up I did’t have all the little neighborhood children to play with.  My dog was my play mate and we loved to romp.  So this is for Biscuit, Shadow, Cowboy, Patch, Cookie, Spud, Leon, and especially Lobo. Lobo is a black lab red bone mix and my Little Man.  And very dapper.

Sweet Home Alabama: Lynyrd Skynyrd, Second Helping, 1974

I am Southern.  If you are Southern you have to like four things: 1) Sweet Tea, 2) Dale Earnhardt, 3) Robert E. Lee, and 4) this song.

Clothes: Barlow Girl, Barlow Girl, 2004

My guardian angel and I (Kayla) discovered Barlow Girl together when we were in high school and this was one of the first songs we heard by them.  We both loved it and immediately fell in love with the band.  As you’re going to fully understand after reading the info for the next song you’ll fully understand this, but Kayla has really left a mark on my life and when I listen to this song…I remember the good times.

One Life to Love: 33 Miles, One Life, 2008

The week before Kayla’s wreck, she and I stayed at our favorite coffee shop until 12:30 a.m.  Which is hilarious because the shop closes at 11:00.  We stayed in the parking lot until 1 while she introduced me to a new Christian band she’d discovered…called 33 Miles.  I went out and bought the CD a couple days after the wreck and this song has been such a comfort.

Birdland: Weather Report, Heavy Weather, 1977

I took Jazz Music in American Society my freshmen year here at AppState and this song was my favorite of all the songs we listened to in that class.  The bass riff is incredible, the sax solo is impeccable, and…it’s just a great song.

So, this has been “Maggie Lowe 101: Music of My Life”.  I hope you check out these songs…and who knows…maybe you’ll find a new favorite band or a new favorite song.  And if you don’t…at least you’ll understand why the crazy kid you pass on campus keeps humming “I Believe I Can Fly” and “Yellow Submarine” before class every, single day!

(If you want to know more about how I feel about things or what not...check out my YouTube channel.  Search for AppSt8Student or click this link for one of my...really terrible videos!  I was at work...and super bored.  Also, you can find me on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/WTRU8.28 ...and if you enjoy the music I play during Unbelievable, Undeniable on Sundays, go check out the blog at undeniableradio.wordpress.com)

And don't forget to tune in from 6-7 pm on Sundays for Unbelievable, Undeniable (the best in Christian rap and hip-hop) and then stick around for the seven o'clock hour for some fun with our regular music.

Peace, love, and macaroni to you all!
